The genus Sebastes Cuvier, 1829, includes 103 species, almost all of them occurring in the North Pacific (Nelson, 1994). Four Sebastes species occur in the North Atlantic (Whitehead et al., 1986). These are:

  • Sebastes fasciatus Storer, 1856 = Sebastes marinus (non Linnaeus) Ryder, 1887 = Sebastes mentella (non Travin) Freund, 1961; subspecies Sebastes fasciatus fasciatus and Sebastes fasciatus kellyi Litvinenko, 1974
    • common names: rosefish, Acadian redfish
